A slightly delayed start to the year's records but it gives a chance to see what's been happening and put it in some sort of context. Glossy Ibises are the main feature of the rarities in January so far. This was predicted given that there are drought conditions in some parts of their southern European range and that has meant more moving north previously. It also suggests more breeding possibilities this year. A similar phenomenon has affected Cattle Egrets in the past but they are far too common now for it to have much meaning. Cattle Egrets are no longer counted here for this reason and the same is true of Great Egrets and Siberian Chiffchaffs. Here's hoping for a rarity filled 2022.
